The title Spark, Iskra or Russian, is both the name of the heroine and the name of the socialist newspaper whose first editor was Vladimir Lenin. In Aleksandra Wałaszek’s film, the protagonist is Katya Kan, a girl dreaming up a minimalistic story on the subject of her own patchwork biography. The film also contains numerous references to an essay by Kan’s father, Alexander Kan, titled “The way, or the history of one curve” (Prelude to a Philosophy of the Future).
